Question: "My daughter suffers from allergies. Should we pull out all the carpets and purchase tile floors?"

Answer: Clean carpets can actually help your daughter breathe more easily than hard surface floors. Studies have shown that particulate contaminants, bacteria and fungi are found to be in higher levels above hard surfaces. This is because every time you walk on the floor, you're kicking up particles into the air you breathe.

Carpeting, on the other hand, is actually your home's largest indoor air filter. Contaminants, bacteria and fungi are trapped in the carpet fibers, so they don't blow around and you don't breathe them in. But just like any filter, your carpets need to be cleaned regularly to remove all those trapped contaminants, so your home's largest filter--your carpeting--can be effective again in helping your daughter breathe air with far less allergens. Frequent vacuuming is CRITICAL in such circumstances, so make sure you buy a good HEPA vac (we use Oreck vacuums) and vacuum at least 3-4 times a week.

So, no, you don't have to pull out all your carpeting. Just be sure to have your carpets professionally cleaned on a regular basis--every six to twelve months. Home shampooers and rental machines are all right for in-between surface cleaning. But to keep your carpets clean and healthy for your daughter, nothing will remove all those deep-down trapped allergens from your carpet fibers like a professional truck-mounted hot water extraction system, as recommended by leading carpet manufacturers.

"Do I need to get carpet protection?"
